Sierra Nevada Opens Their Winter Season Just in Time for December Bank Holiday
Snow lovers rejoice – Southern Spain’s centre of all things ski and snowboard will kick off its winter season in time for the early December holidays thanks to heavy snowfalls these past few weeks.
The favourable conditions have allowed local resorts to open 11 kilometres of runs, including the slopes at the Borreguiles and Veleta locations, including areas for beginners. Beginning now, visitors can travel to the Granada Sierra Nevada area to get their fill of fun and runs before the hectic Christmas holidays.
Located just a short drive from the beautiful and historical streets of Granada, the resorts offer a quick and easy winter escape and this year, they have even more to offer. Following renovations, the resort has expanded its family and welcome areas; with an even more defined area reserved for novice skiers. Also this year, guests will find a new carpet conveyer and easier access to the Borreguiles gondola, following improvements to the resort’s layout.
Sun and Snow for the Winter Holidays
So grab your friends and family, your sled, ski or board, and head down to one of Europe’s most amazing winter escapes. However, for those not won over by the thought of skiing or boarding down the powdery slopes of Southern Spain’s mountainsides, the Sierra Nevada offers the unique experience of enjoying the sea and mountains in a single day.
A true rarity in Europe, the Sierra Nevada Mountains are situated just short drive from the beautiful Mediterranean coastline, allowing the claim that guests can ski with the sea as a backdrop. And while the sea may not sound too appealing in the middle of winter, Spain’s famed southern coast offers up an ideal, soothing climate even as the year comes to an end.
Just south of the mountains, guests can find the town off Torrox, in the region of Malaga, which enjoys excellent temperatures throughout the year. Just imagine finishing off a day on the slopes with a delicious dinner of fried fish just beside the sea.
Guests can find luxury and comfort in Torrox Costa or nearby Nerja, offering the white stained village feel, narrow streets and balconies adorned with typical Andalucía geraniums just a short drive from the ski resorts. From there, travellers can also enjoy a number of different cultural and trekking routes if they grow tired of the snow, or simply sit back and enjoy a glass of locally made raisin wine near the stunning Cueva de Nerja.
A Warm and Comfortable Place to Stay
Finding an ideal place to stay on your winter break is easy with the Fuerte Hotels in Torrox Costa, as well as the luxury apartments available at Fuerte Calaceite. These apartments offer 1,2 and 3 bedroom options along the coastline with magnificent sea views. Each unit is fully quipped with a kitchen, satellite TV, a terrace and relaxing green areas with hammocks.
For planning ahead, don’t forget that in March the Sierra Nevada skiing area will host the Superfinal of the World Cup of Freestyle Snowboard and Skiing, bringing together the globe’s best 550 winter athletes. Its not to be missed and don’t forget that lower prices will be available to those who book early.
