Routes with the corners to discover Marbella

Across much of Europe, the arrival of October means unpacking boxes of cool weather clothing and preparing for the long slog through to next Spring

Sweaters, scarves and caps all come to mind – anything to keep the brisk autumn wind at bay. However, for one glorious corner of Spain, October means throwing the doors open wide, gathering friends and heading for the hills. To hike that is.

Each October, from the 11th through the 14th, Marbella welcomes visitors from across the globe to enjoy the lingering warm weather, stunning views and unparalleled natural beauty of Andalucía. For those few days, locals and guests have the chance to explore everything southern Spain has to offer by foot as a part of the annual 4Days Walking gathering. Each day, participants can chose from an array of organized routes, taking them from the beautiful beach, through the charming city and into the breathtaking countryside – all within reach and all at your own pace.

In its second year, the 4Days Walking event welcomes travellers to explore the quaint village life and natural splendour of Andalucía by making the most of hiking courses ranging from 20 to 30 miles, including rural and urban options. With so much to offer, hikers can find exactly the length and course they need, no matter their taste.

Last year’s inaugural event brought more than 600 attendees to Spain’s Mediterranean shores, including delegations from across Europe. This year, organizers are expecting a significantly larger turnout, with more than 1200 scheduled to attend.

One of the event’s primary organizers, Fuerte Hoteles offers the chance for participants to stay in the middle of all the hiking action, including outstanding seaside locations where guests can rest and relax after a long day spent exploring the country-side. Situated just beside the beach, Fuerte Miramar and Fuerte Marbella provides a perfect spot to start and stop the annual hiking adventure.

An Ideal Climate for Hiking

Put simply, there are few destinations that offer as many options for trekking and exploring as Marbella, located at the heart of Spain’s Costa del Sol and just a short flight from most UK airports. Nestled at the base of a mountain range that rises up from the Mediterranean coast, the town allows quick and easy access to a host of trails that explore the best of Andalucía’s stunning outdoors, all within minutes of the region’s stunning beaches and village life and Marbella hotels. What’s more, Marbella’s location between the mountain and sea keeps temperatures warm long after the summer crowds have gone home.

The Terrazas del Puerto Deportivo, near the old town, will be the starting point for both 20 and 30 kilometre routes, covering the local beach, city and mountainside. On the final day, October 14th, there will be a final hike back along the Via Gladiola to Terrazas del Puerto where the event will come to a close.

Caring for the Environment

Reflecting Fuerte Hoteles deep commitment to preserving the local environment, the Marbella 4Days Walking will, once again, work to make sure the event remains carbon neutral. To make sure the annual event remains true to core values of sustainability and environmental protection, it will be followed by a study of emissions released, including those related to the consumption of electricity, paper and displacement. This information will be used to calculate how many tons of CO2 have been released and how many trees will need to be planted to compensate for the loss.

In order to help the environment by organizing Marbella 4Days Walking, has decided to make, once again, the CO2 emissions generated by its organization and develop a sustainable event. These trees will be donated and planted by the Marbella Arboretum (which also works with Fuerte Hoteles). Planting native trees in these facilities helps restore natural habitats and to create a park with significant environmental and educational value in the city.
