Fuerte Hoteles celebrates the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
The theme for this year that marks the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol is “Protecting our atmosphere for generations to come”.
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated every year on 16 September. Fuerte Hoteles, as hotel chain distinguished for its corporate social responsibility, joins this celebration aimed to raise awareness and disseminate information about the importance of the ozone layer to sustain life on the planet.
This year the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer is also commemorated. The theme for this year’s celebration, “Protecting our atmosphere for generations to come”, emphasises the extraordinary collaboration and environmental benefits achieved by the world’s governments through this agreement.
The phaseout of the controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions not only help to protect the ozone layer from the worrying degeneration occurring in the last years, but these issues also have direct effects on human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the earth.
What is ozone and why are we concerned about it?
Ozone is an especial form of the element oxygen with chemical formula O3. The oxygen we breathe and which is vital for life on earth is O2.
Ozone concentrations in our atmosphere are very low; however, its presence is vital for human well-being. Most of the ozone is in the upper zone of the atmosphere, between 10 and 40 km above the Earth’s surface. This region is called stratosphere and contains about 90% of the atmospheric ozone.
This region absorbs some of the Sun ultraviolet radiation, which is biologically harmful. Thanks to this beneficial role, the stratospheric ozone is considered to be “good”. On the contrary the excess of ozone in the Earth’s surface is considered to be “bad” because it is harmful to humans, plants and animals, acting as a pollutant.
Fuerte Hoteles, within its social responsibility policy has as one of main objectives taking care of its environment, minimising the impact of its activities and raising awareness of its stakeholders on the importance and care for the environment.
As a company concerned about the necessity of conserving the natural environment and preserving the ozone layer, Fuerte Hoteles has adopted in its operating policy not to use appliances containing polluting gases such as CFCs and HFCFs.
