Our Top Tips to Save Energy At Home: Unplugged!

Caring for the environment

It’s almost certain that every time you come home to an electricity bill, you are reminded that you should be doing more to save energy and money.

We’re here with the tips to let make sure that happens.

To begin with, we all must remember that saving energy is not just a matter of what big businesses or governments can do, but what we can all do at home. A simple set of household habits can be a profitable and responsible way to contribute to a more sustainable world.

On behalf of Fuerte Hotels, we are here to offer up some useful tips based on over fifty years of experience of investment in responsible tourism that doesn’t sacrifice quality. So, grab a pen and paper and take notes:

Unplug

Even I have to admit that I sometimes forget that I’ve left mobile phone chargers, computers, tablets and media players plugged in. However, everyone should remember that even if those tools and toys are off, if they are plugged in, they are still wasting energy so always remember: Remove the Plug!

If you find removing the plugs each day a pain or challenging because of their position, you might want to try installing outlets with an ‘Off’ option. By just pushing a small button on the panel, you can cut off power as needed, saving money and effort with a modern and functional option.

At Fuerte Hotels, this has been made even easier with the installation of automatic lights and electricity that runs only when key cards are used, allowing guests to enjoy their trip to the beach without worrying about what is happening with the charger.

LED Bulbs: Longer Life and Less Consumption

Lighting accounts for around 10% of energy bills of households, so it is one of the easiest ways to save.

Replace traditional lights with LED bulbs and while they may prove to be a little more expensive in the short term, they will be far more effective and profitable in the long term. Note that the average life of a halogen light bulb is 2,000 hours, while an LED light can be as high as 30,000 hours, saving a lot while using far less overall energy. Double Savings!

At Fuerte Hotels, we have been gradually replacing all the traditional lighting with low-energy and LED options. This represents a step forward for the hotel group and not because we have low light.

Turn off the Light – You’ll Notice the Difference

Of course, the easiest way to save on your electric bill is simply switching off lights when not needed. Something simple that we forget far too often, especially the little ones around the house. Turn it off even if you leave a room even for one minute! You’ll notice it when the bill arrives.

At home, consider how much light you really need for your daily life, including reading a book or watching TV, and use just enough to keep your eyes focused and not strained. In hallways and outside, sensors can be installed to allow light to be used only when needed, but remember not to make them too sensitive or you’ll end up wasting energy.

At Fuerte Hotels, we have implemented computerized energy tools for just this option. We also use
twilight rays in outer areas that turn on and off in daylight and sensors in common rooms. We light only when needed!

Soon we will give you more tips to help lower your home bill. In the next post we’ll talk about appliances, heating and solar panels, among other energy saving options.
