Practical tips for enjoying tapas in Ronda
- Avoid peak tourist hours
Bars tend to be busiest between 1:30–3:30 p.m. and 8:00–10:30 p.m. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere — and quicker service — it’s best to arrive a bit earlier or in between these times. Many bars open from midday, so you can begin your route at a leisurely pace. - Start in the centre… but don’t stop there
Streets like Virgen de los Remedios, Carrera Espinel (locally known as La Bola), and the Plaza del Socorro area are classic starting points. However, if you venture a little further to neighbourhoods like San Francisco or Padre Jesús, you’ll find more traditional bars, popular with locals and often more budget-friendly. - Ask if a tapa is included
In some bars, a tapa is included with your drink; in others, it’s charged separately. Don’t hesitate to ask. There are still places in Ronda where ordering a small beer (caña) or a glass of wine comes with a complimentary tapa. - Don’t stay in just one place
Tapas are meant to be enjoyed on the move — bar-hopping is part of the experience. Try one tapa at each spot and let yourself be surprised by the variety of styles, flavours, and atmospheres the city has to offer. - Follow the locals
A good rule of thumb is to go where the locals eat. If you find a bustling spot with mostly local clientele and few multilingual menus, chances are the tapas are authentic and reasonably priced.
- Choose local specialities
Be sure to try some of Ronda’s regional delights, such as:
-
- Game dishes (venison, wild boar)
- Serrano cold cuts (like chorizo or morcilla rondeña)
- Goat’s cheese from the Serranía de Ronda
- Tapas made with chestnuts from the Genal Valley (in season)
And to accompany it all: wines from Ronda, which are gaining increasing recognition both within and beyond Andalucia.
- Ask about off-menu suggestions
Many bars prepare daily specials that aren’t listed on the menu. Asking your waiter for recommendations can lead to discovering true homemade gems. - Carry some cash
Although most places accept cards, smaller bars may still prefer cash payments — especially if you’re only ordering a drink and a tapa. - Book ahead on weekends or holidays
Popular tapas bars can fill up quickly on weekends and public holidays, especially during high season. If you have a particular place in mind to start your route, it’s a good idea to reserve in advance or arrive early. - Don’t rush
Tapas are more than just food — they’re part of a relaxed, social ritual. Take your time, savour each bite, chat with the staff, and let Ronda’s charm do the rest.
