Here are some curiosities about these processions:

The medieval origins of the processions: Although the Holy Week processions as we know them today became firmly established in the 16th century, their origins date back to the Middle Ages, when brotherhoods carried out public acts of penance.

Tunic and hood: Penitents who participate in the processions wear tunics and hoods, which are conical pointed hoods. These garments are used to preserve the anonymity of the penitent, allowing them to perform their penance in a more humble and sincere manner.

Floats and costaleros: The floats carried in the processions are huge wooden structures carved and decorated with religious images. Costaleros are people who carry these floats on their shoulders, walking for hours in processions, demonstrating their devotion and physical strength.

Saetas: During the processions, it is common to hear saetas, which are improvised flamenco songs expressing devotion and emotion towards the religious images. These songs are a fundamental part of Andalusian Holy Week.

Brotherhoods and fraternities: The processions are organized by religious brotherhoods and fraternities. Each one has its own traditions and distinctive attire, and they compete in some cities for the honor of being the most prominent brotherhood.

Procession schedules: The processions usually have strict schedules, and some start in the early morning and extend well into the night. The schedules can vary from one city to another and from one day to another during Holy Week.

Nazarenos: Nazarenos are the penitents who wear the tunics and hoods. Each brotherhood has its own color and style of tunic, making it easy to identify which brotherhood they belong to.

Sacred art: The floats and religious images carried in the processions are genuine works of art. Many of these sculptures are old and created by renowned artists.

Incense and candles: During the processions, incense is burned, and lit candles are carried, creating a spiritual and solemn atmosphere.

Silence and contemplation: Unlike other religious festivals, the Holy Week processions in Andalucía are characterized by respect and solemnity. Often, a reverent silence is maintained during the procession.

Decorated streets: Many streets where the processions pass are adorned with flowers and colored sawdust carpets, creating a festive and religious atmosphere.

The “levantás” and the effort of the costaleros: When a religious float (paso) begins to move, a “levantá” is performed, which consists of lifting the structure suddenly, with strength and in unison. In some brotherhoods, the first levantá is dedicated to a specific person or cause.

The heaviest religious float in Spain is in Seville: The float of the Virgin of Esperanza Macarena, which is carried during Seville’s Madrugá (the early hours of Good Friday), is one of the heaviest, weighing over a tonne. Its complex structure, along with the large number of flowers and ornaments, makes it a true challenge for the costaleros (bearers).

The “petalá” in honour of the Virgin: In many cities, when the Virgin passes through certain locations, devotees throw a “petalá”—a shower of flower petals that falls onto the image from balconies and rooftops, creating a stunning visual effect.

Barefoot Nazarenes as a sign of penance: Some Nazarenes walk the long route of the procession barefoot as an act of penance and devotion. This practice is common in several Andalucian cities, particularly in Seville and Córdoba.

Granada, the only city with a procession that passes through the Alhambra: The Brotherhood of Santa María de la Alhambra is the only one granted the privilege of passing through the interior of the Nasrid monumental complex. This route, with the illuminated Alhambra as a backdrop, is one of the most moving moments of Granada’s Holy Week.

Rain, the great enemy of the processions: Holy Week is a celebration highly dependent on the weather. If it rains, many brotherhoods decide not to go out in order to protect their images and floats from damage, which causes great disappointment among the faithful and participants.

Processions and Saetas. here are 15 things you should know about Holy Week in Andalucia

ACCOMMODATION

Hotel Fuerte Grazalema

If you’re thinking of going to Andalucia for Holy Week, we recommend Fuerte Hoteles. Hotels and apartments with excellent service and quality according to Tripadvisor, and supported by over 60 years of experience, they are the best choice for a getaway to unwind and experience this Passion Week. Marbella, Conil, Grazalema, El Rompido or Torrox are some areas where you can find great accommodation.

Easter Week in Andalucia is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Spain and each year attracts thousands of faithful who come to fervently experience the most popular religion.
