Through these activities, we can get closer to the flora and fauna of Malaga while doing physical exercise. There are more than 40 official hiking trails in Malaga: small and long distance, with slopes and plains, with rivers, and with all kinds of flora and fauna.<\/p>\n

Here we propose 10 hiking trails in Malaga in which a bottle of water, a sandwich, and the desire to enjoy the outdoors are the only requirements to enjoy a fantastic day of nature.<\/p>\n

Hiking trail – Guadalmina Channel<\/h2>\n

This practically plain trail runs along the channel that runs parallel to the riverbed of the Guadalmina River. Must not be confused with the aquatic route of the Angosturas del Guadalmina, although it can be a good complement to this river route.<\/p>\n

The starting point is near the Virgen del Rosario chapel, around two kilometres from Benahav\u00eds, where there is a designated parking area. From there, follow the signs towards the bridge crossing the Angosturas del Guadalmina gorge.<\/p>\n

The route begins by crossing the bridge over the Guadalmina River. Immediately after the bridge, turn right and continue along the path beside the irrigation channel.<\/p>\n

Along the route, you will come across walkways, bridges and specially adapted sections that allow you to follow the channel while enjoying the scenery of the Angosturas gorge. After walking alongside the channel, the route continues along the waymarked trail before returning to the area around the chapel. In total, this circular trail covers approximately 4.3 kilometres.<\/p>\n

On the way back, you can visit Charco de las Mozas, one of the best-known spots on the Guadalmina River. Bear in mind that this natural pool and the Angosturas river route are not part of the hiking trail. Hiking trail – Estaci\u00f3n de Benaoj\u00e1n-Estaci\u00f3n de Jimera<\/h2>\n

The starting point of this route is at Estacion de Benaoj\u00e1n. Specifically, next to the bridge over the Guadiaro River. After crossing it you will find indication panels both of this path and other integrated into the Gran Senda de M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n

This riverside route runs between Benaoj\u00e1n-Montejaque and Jimera de L\u00edbar railway stations. The section between the two stations covers most of stage 25 of the Gran Senda de M\u00e1laga. Following the official stage as far as the centre of Jimera de L\u00edbar brings the total distance to 9.6 kilometres, with an estimated walking time of around three hours.<\/p>\n

Along the way, you can enjoy a riverside landscape filled with ash trees, willows, poplars and oleanders. The path runs close to the Guadiaro River and crosses some of the most characteristic scenery in the Serran\u00eda de Ronda.<\/p>\n

From the Estaci\u00f3n de Jimera neighbourhood, you can return along the same route. Alternatively, you can leave one vehicle at each end of the trail or use public transport between the two stations. Check Renfe\u2019s timetables and service information beforehand, as the rail connection may be replaced by a bus service.<\/p>\n

Bear in mind that stage 26 of the Gran Senda de M\u00e1laga also begins in Jimera de L\u00edbar and connects the village with Benalaur\u00eda.<\/p>\n

This coastal route is one of the sections that make up the Senda Litoral de M\u00e1laga. In this case connects the eastern area of the city of Malaga to the municipality of Rinc\u00f3n de la Victoria. This route passes by emblematic spots on the coast like the Pe\u00f1\u00f3n del Cuervo or El Cantal.<\/p>\n

How to get to the starting point<\/h3>\n

The starting point of this route is next to the El Candado club, where the marina of the same name is located. Nearby, next to a parking area, you can see the beginning of the lane that leads the Senda Litoral to Rinc\u00f3n de la Victoria. This section also coincides partially with the first route of the Gran Senda de M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n

Route description<\/h3>\n

This route, with more than 7 kilometers, can be fully done until Rinc\u00f3n de la Victoria or we can choose to go back before if there isn’t enough time to complete it or if the weather is not ideal. That, sets the difference from other sections of the Senda Litoral, in some spots, like El Cantal or the strip of Pe\u00f1\u00f3n del Cuervo, that go through tunnels that allow partial shelter from the inclement weather, such as rain, wind or excessive heat. Despite this, it is not recommended to do this route if the weather forecast is not the ideal.<\/p>\n

The route, that is almost fully plain, allows you to know the coastal landscape of the eastern area of Malaga and of Rinc\u00f3n de la Victoria, where we especially highlight the abrupt coast of this metropolitan area. Five hundred meters from the route we pass next to the beach of Pe\u00f1\u00f3n del Cuervo, it bears this name because of the rock of the same name located on the bank.<\/p>\n

From the beach of Pe\u00f1\u00f3n del Cuervo the road heads towards the village of La Ara\u00f1a, located facing the spectacular cement factory. Here the path goes through the streets of this popular suburb, where today a watchtower survives from which we still have a broad view of the Bay of M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n

From La Ara\u00f1a the road passes to the municipality of Rinc\u00f3n de la Victoria crossing for this the Arroyo de Total\u00e1n through a gateway, its riverbed tends to be dry during almost the entire year. Thus, the hiker will pass through the coastal strip of the village of La Cala del Moral. For approximately 1,5 km the road will be the promenade that ends in the area known as El Cantal, one of the most abrupt coastal places of the Malaga coast. Therefore, it is one of the most spectacular areas of this section of the Senda Litoral.<\/p>\n

To cross El Cantal there are several alternatives that run parallel. The one to the right that ascends through stairs will allow you to enjoy the best views. In any case, this part of the tour will reach the tunnel that was once used by the railway to connect Malaga to other locations in the eastern area of the province.<\/p>\n

The tunnel, of required tour, ends just in the promenade of Rinc\u00f3n de la Victoria, next to the niche of the Virgen del Carmen. Although the trail can end at this point, it is worthwhile to continue a few meters more to enjoy the beaches of Rinc\u00f3n de la Victoria and its old fishermen quarter.<\/p>\n

The return will be on the same path, but there is also the option of returning on public transport, since that by the avenida del Mediterr\u00e1neo, in the center of the promenade of Rincon, often passes a long-distance bus that reaches the center of Malaga passing through the eastern part of the city.<\/p>\n

The starting point of this route is in the village of Torre del Mar. Specifically, we must find its promenade and from there the landmark located in the western-most area of the beach.<\/p>\n

Route description<\/h3>\n

This route, no longer than 3.5 kilometers and virtually flat, is conducive to enjoy a gentle stroll along the coast of V\u00e9lez. Thus, through the enabled path on the beach or along the promenade we can reach the tourist resort of Torre del Mar and the village of La Caleta de V\u00e9lez, known especially for its fishing port.<\/p>\n

The tour is practically urban, but allows you to enjoy the rich landscape of this area of the coast of Axarqu\u00eda. So, at its start runs virtually all the coast of Torre del Mar, the most important village of the Velez-Malaga coast. Although many of its historical relics have been lost over time, the charm of its beaches and its spacious promenade is preserved. From this coast walk we may see or feel its main spots, like its sugar ancient industrial remains. On the other hand, in the center of the village stands out especially the walk of Larios, that is its main pedestrian artery.<\/p>\n

\"La<\/h3>\n

The route, that is well marked, with indicative panels every five hundred meters, also allows you to walk next to lighthouses of Torre del Mar. Next to the most recent, we can see one built of stone, but far more curious is the one that is located inland, surrounded by blocks of buildings. To this we must add the ecological value of the mouth of the V\u00e9lez River, next to the town center. It is a spot of ornithological interest by the presence of different types of migratory birds.<\/p>\n

This short route, that corresponds to one of the sections of the Senda Litoral, does not lose sight at any time of the coastal urban areas. In fact, Torre del Mar is linked directly with the mentioned village of La Caleta de V\u00e9lez. Few meters after entering the territory of this village, we see its fishing port and marina, that is currently the only port of the eastern coast of Malaga. Here arrive many of the fish, seafood and mollusks of the Mediterranean that then are prepared in restaurants of the area. In addition, it has established itself in recent years within the nautical venues and leisure. In the eastern-most area we can also visit the villages of Lagos and Mezquitilla, located paradoxically between Algarrobo and Torrox.<\/p>\n

The return from La Caleta de V\u00e9lez to Torre del Mar will be made through the beach path, although the promenade can also be used as an alternative. In any case, it is recommended avoid hot days and the hours of greater solar incidence, especially during the summer. On the other hand, are especially recommended the first and the last hour of the day to enjoy even more the coastal landscape of Axarqu\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Hiking trail –\u00a0Stroll by the Guadaiza River<\/h2>\n

This route runs along the riverbed of the Guadaiza one of the rivers that rises on the southern slopes of Sierra Bermeja and flows along through part of the territories of Marbella and Benahav\u00eds until it disgorges into the town of San Pedro de Alc\u00e1ntara.<\/p>\n

How to get to the starting point<\/h3>\n

The starting point of this route is next to the dam of the Guadaiza River. To get there we must take the A-7, either heading to Algeciras or to Malaga, until the exit for Nueva Andaluc\u00eda. Through the Avenida de los Girasoles, first, and the Avenida Calder\u00f3n de la Barca, next, it reaches the golf course Los Naranjos. In this point we have to take the Syrian Street and pass just below the highway’s toll (AP-7). Right there it will connect with the Guadaiza River.<\/p>\n

Route description<\/h3>\n

The route begins near the diversion dam on the Guadaiza River. Conditions along the riverbed and at the access points may change, so check that access is permitted and that the route is safe before setting off.<\/p>\n

From here, the trail continues alongside the river through a landscape of riverside vegetation, natural pools and rocky areas. The path may be difficult to identify in some sections, so proceed carefully and pay close attention to the terrain.<\/p>\n

The route is not recommended when rain is forecast, following periods of heavy rainfall or whenever the river level is high. If continuing would require swimming or crossing a deep pool, the safest option is to turn back and return along the same route.<\/p>\n

The best way to reach Puerto Mart\u00ednez, where this route begins, is from Casarabonela. From the A-357 Guadalhorce road, between kilometre markers 39 and 40, turn onto the A-354 and continue for around 10 kilometres until you reach the junction with the A-7275, which leads directly to Casarabonela.<\/p>\n

Once in the village, take the MA-5401 towards El Burgo and continue until you reach Puerto Mart\u00ednez, where the route begins and parking is available.<\/p>\n

Description of the hiking trail<\/h3>\n

This circular trail covers 2.5 kilometres and takes approximately two hours to complete.<\/p>\n

The route begins at Puerto Mart\u00ednez, a mountain pass and crossroads connecting the municipalities of Casarabonela, El Burgo and Ardales. Shortly after setting off, you will see a track branching off to the left. Follow this path to continue along the route.<\/p>\n

The landscape is dominated by pine forests and the limestone formations characteristic of this area. Along the way, you can also see old lime kilns, which were traditionally used to produce lime.<\/p>\n

The path leads to the Madrid viewpoint, which offers extensive views of the surrounding countryside. Further ahead, you will reach Fuente Madrid, an old spring that remains dry for much of the year.<\/p>\n

To reach the beginning of the route, take the MA-7303 from J\u00fazcar towards Cartajima. After approximately two kilometres, turn onto the track leading to Puerto de las Eras. The final section follows a narrow track, so drive with extra care.<\/p>\n

The route begins at Puerto de las Eras and crosses a landscape characterised by rocky formations and the chestnut forests of the Serran\u00eda de Ronda.<\/p>\n

Along the trail, you can see several natural figures created by the erosion of the rocks. El Camello, or the Camel, and El \u00c1guila, or the Eagle, are two clear examples.<\/p>\n

From the area known as El Puertecillo, you can admire some of these formations, as well as magnificent views of the countryside around J\u00fazcar and the Genal Valley.<\/p>\n

This is generally considered an easy route. The trail covers 2.68 kilometres and takes approximately one hour to complete.<\/p>\n

The climb up San Ant\u00f3n is exceptionally beautiful and particularly impressive for first-time visitors, as it offers incredible panoramic views over the city of M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n

There are several routes across the mountain, so the distance, elevation gain and duration will depend on the option you choose. The Ruta de la Cruz, for example, takes approximately two hours and includes a moderately difficult section. The circular Lagarillo Blanco route covers four kilometres and takes around three and a half hours when the interpretive stops are included.<\/p>\n

As you make your way up, you will come across several viewpoints overlooking the M\u00e1laga coastline, the Montes de M\u00e1laga and much of the city. The vegetation consists mainly of pine forests, Mediterranean scrubland and species adapted to the area\u2019s dry climate.<\/p>\n

The province of Malaga offers routes for every taste and level, from gentle walks by the sea to mountain trails, riverside paths and routes that follow the course of its rivers. Before setting off, it is important to plan the excursion carefully and follow a few basic recommendations to enjoy the scenery safely.<\/p>\n

Choose a route suited to your level<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not all routes have the same level of difficulty. Before choosing one, check the distance, elevation gain, estimated duration and type of terrain. We should also find out whether the route is linear or circular and take the return journey into account.<\/p>\n

When walking with children, inexperienced walkers or beginners, it is best to choose short, well-signposted routes with little elevation gain. Coastal paths are generally easier, while some mountain trails and river routes require a higher level of fitness and preparation.<\/p>\n

Check the condition of the trail<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conditions can change due to landslides, maintenance work, rising river levels, damaged footbridges or the risk of forest fires. Before travelling, we should therefore check the latest information published by the relevant local council, the Gran Senda de M\u00e1laga, the Andalusian Mountaineering Federation or the authority responsible for the natural area.<\/p>\n

Routes shared on apps such as Wikiloc can be very useful for navigation, but they do not always reflect the current condition of the trail. Use them as a guide and always pay attention to signs and official notices along the route.<\/p>\n

The weather can completely change the conditions of a route. It is not advisable to set out when thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds or excessively high temperatures are forecast.<\/p>\n

During the summer, it is best to start early in the morning and avoid the hottest hours of the day. In autumn and winter, we should pay particular attention to rainfall, as it can raise river levels, make the ground more slippery and make some paths difficult to cross.<\/p>\n

Take water, sun protection and suitable equipment<\/strong><\/p>\n

A bottle of water, something to eat and plenty of enthusiasm for enjoying the outdoors are essential. We should also wear comfortable clothing and footwear suited to the terrain. Walking shoes or boots should provide good support and have non-slip soles.<\/p>\n

Even on cloudy days, it is advisable to use sunscreen and wear a hat and sunglasses. We should also carry a small backpack containing a fully charged mobile phone, a downloaded map or GPS track, a lightweight warm layer and a basic first-aid kit.<\/p>\n

River routes require footwear that can get wet and provides good grip. Mobile phones, cameras, keys and other delicate items should be kept in a waterproof bag or container.<\/p>\n

Take extra care around rivers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Water levels and the strength of the current can vary, even in places that appear calm. We should not enter deep pools, cross fast-flowing sections or continue along the riverbed unless we know the depth and are certain that conditions are safe.<\/p>\n

After heavy rainfall, the safest option is to postpone any river walk. Wet stones, algae and sudden changes in the water level can increase the risk of slipping or falling. If the route becomes too difficult or continuing requires swimming, it is always better to turn back the way we came.<\/p>\n

Tell someone about your route<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before starting a walk, particularly one that passes through a remote or rarely visited area, tell a friend or relative which route you intend to follow and approximately what time you expect to return.<\/p>\n

It is also advisable to set off with enough time to finish before nightfall. If you lose your bearings, do not continue walking without knowing where you are going. Return to the last place you recognised or follow the instructions provided by the emergency services.<\/p>\n

Respect the natural surroundings<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the great attractions of these routes is the opportunity to discover Malaga\u2019s natural diversity. To help protect it, we should stay on designated paths, avoid disturbing wildlife and never pick plants or remove stones.<\/p>\n

All rubbish should be taken away with us. We must not light fires, discard cigarette ends or do anything else that could cause a wildfire. If we come across a barrier, closure notice or restricted area, we should follow the instructions and find an alternative route.<\/p>\n
