And even if our impression is that it is a small place, nothing could be further from the truth, since it contains a multitude of magical corners which are very easy to miss if it is our first visit and we are not paying attention.

For any adventurous visitors who decide to pay a visit to Medina Azahara without a guide, we think that nobody should under any circumstances miss the House of Ya’far for its architecture and for the condition in which it is preserved. What’s more, you’ll be amazed by the Rico Room, which has been restored to give a rather vivid image of the splendour the city enjoyed. Below are a few simple (but useful) ideas to give your trip more rhythm, flavour and meaning.

Plan with the season and climate in mind

Andalucia’s climate varies greatly throughout the year. Summers can be very hot inland (Seville, Córdoba), while coastal areas such as the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz enjoy cooler temperatures thanks to refreshing sea breezes.

If nature is your main focus (Doñana, the Sierra de Grazalema or Cabo de Gata), check the forecast before heading out. It helps you choose the best time of day for walks, hikes or viewpoints.

Book tickets in advance for key attractions

Landmarks such as the Alhambra in Granada, the Mezquita-Cathedral in Córdoba or the Alcázar in Seville often sell out weeks ahead during high season.

Booking early helps you avoid long queues and secure the time slot that best fits your itinerary.

Look beyond the most popular routes

Andalucia is full of surprising places that don’t always appear in the first search results:

Villages with original themes or curious stories, such as Júzcar.

Smaller historic towns with fewer crowds, like Úbeda and Baeza, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Natural landscapes such as El Torcal de Antequera, with well-signposted trails suitable for all levels.

Combine cities with nature

If you’re visiting Seville, Córdoba or Málaga, set aside a day to explore a nearby natural park or stretch of coastline.

After days immersed in urban history, breathing fresh air in Cabo de Gata or walking the trails of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park can completely transform your experience.

Experience local festivals if you can

Andalucia is known for its unique celebrations, from Semana Santa and the April Fair to the Cádiz Carnival.

Check the local calendar and, if dates match, build them into your route. Watching a procession or a street performance offers a direct connection to the region’s cultural soul.

Savour it, don’t just sample it

Andalucian cuisine goes far beyond tapas, from huevos a la flamenca to Huelva’s prized white prawns, along with the sweet wines of Jerez de la Frontera.

Seek out local markets, traditional tabancos or seasonal menus to experience the region with all five senses.

Create themed routes around your interests

History: Mezquita-Cathedral, Medina Azahara and the Alcazaba.

Nature and views: the Caminito del Rey, El Torcal and unspoilt beaches in Cádiz and Huelva.

Charming villages: the White Villages Route (Setenil de las Bodegas, Arcos de la Frontera, Grazalema, and more).

Think about getting around

Travelling by car gives you greater flexibility, especially if you plan to visit villages or natural parks.

Trains and buses also make it easy to organise efficient city-based itineraries.
