Qué ver y qué hacer en Lanjarón

What to see and what to do in Lanjarón, the thermal village

The Sierra Nevada holds among its treasures Lanjarón, a village in Granada known as the village of water. Between the Lecrín Valley and the gates of the Alpujarra, Lanjarón is one of the most beautiful villages in the province. Its name reminds us of a brand of water, and it is precisely the water that is one of the main assets of this place and an attraction for tourism in Lanjarón. It is not only the quality of the water that comes from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada but also its medicinal powers and the Balneario, which is one of the things to see in Lanjarón.

The ideal location of this village gives it the architecture of its streets and houses typical of the villages of the Alpujarra. Discovering the Nasrid past of this area is one of the things to do in Lanjarón as well as getting to know the history and traditions that form part of the cultural wealth of the water village.

HOW TO GET TO LANJARÓN

Lanjaron, Granada

To get to Lanjarón you have the option of going by bus, taxi or car.

To go by bus, you will have to check the timetables here. We recommend that you look for tickets in advance and pay attention to the timetables for both the outward and return journeys, as there may or may not be any depending on the date.

The taxi option is very convenient but the most expensive, so going by car is the most economical way and can fit in with your schedule.

The distance by car depends on your starting point, but if you are in Malaga for example it is approximately one and a half hours, while from Nerja it is less than 50 minutes.

HISTORY OF LANJARÓN

Lanjarón, castillo

The history of Lanjarón begins with the Arabs. The Nasrid’s presence is more than evident thanks to the archaeological remains found, among which the ruins of the castle stand out.

With a very marked Nasrid past, in 1490 Ferdinand the Catholic conquered it.

After this, Lanjarón took a stand against the French in the War of Independence, leading to its inhabitants being known as the “cañoneros”.

The importance of water in Lanjarón goes back to its beginnings and although the Arab legacy can be seen in the architecture of its houses and in the construction of its streets which we can still see today, the truth is that its name comes from the pre-Roman word “lanchar” which means “place abundant in water”.

Lanjarón is a village marked by the culture of its ancestors which is still latent in the streets of this village at the gates of the Alpujarra.

THE WATER OF LANJARÓN, THE THERMAL VILLAGE

Lanjarón, cascada

The curative power of its waters is more than well known; this is the main claim of its ancestors and also nowadays. Although it was not until the 19th century that Lanjarón began to be known, its curative waters were already used in the village.

The health-giving capacity of the waters that reach the village is such that a thermal centre was built… It began in the early 20th century and only privileged and elite families were initially allowed to visit it. The use of the thermal centre was for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. During almost all the previous century, it lived its heyday and nowadays it is still a renovated place, with more advanced techniques that have turned it into a spa.

There are many legends about water in Lanjarón, such as that of a sick child who drank water from a spring and was cured. However, the best known is that thanks to the water of this village, it is the longest-living village in Spain.
