Top music: trip through the 8 most anticipated festivals of Málaga

Festivals mean party, fun and hours and hours of the best live music. With good weather, our calendars start getting busy with music appointments. In recent years, Malaga has seen an increasing number of concerts dedicated to different musical genres, from rock to electronic, indie and jazz. From Villa de Ojén to Torre del Mar, all the coastline of Malaga offers a wide variety of festivals.

Here we talk about the best rated, the “must” of music festivals in Malaga.

    Coincierto

Guests. The Skatalites, Siniestro Total, Furia Trinidad, Elphomega, Malaka Youth, El Cirguero, Briatore and Hairy Nipples.

Coin resurrects one of the pioneering festivals in Malaga: Coincierto. After more than a decade, we have the return of a festival from the 80s and 90s, which placed the town of Valle del Guadalhorce close to blunted groups on the national scene. The event, organized by the Council of Coín and two local sponsors will no longer be just a series of concerts at the football field; now the main stage moves to the schoolyard Carazony (the only venue with entrance fee) where live music is mixed in the streets of the town with local craft stands.

    Ojeando Festival

Guests. Delorentos, Javiera Mena, Full, León Benavente, Carlos Sadness, Elyella Djs, Hungry Butterfly, Harakiri Beach, Caballito de Mar Man, Glaciar and Alfred Larios. More artists to come.

For the ninth consecutive year, the first weekend of July 2016 will undergo a transformation: Ojén turns into Ojeando, the most singular indie festival of the summer. And it is because it involves the entire population of Sierra de las Nieves, their neighbours and their facilities: from the main square (free stage with emerging groups and local bands) the school yard (payment and reserved for main bands). So far focused on the national artists, Ojeando welcomes indie music for the first time with Delorentos and Chilean singer Javiera Mena.

    Weekend Beach

Guests. Wiz Khalifa, Gentleman & Ky-Mani Marley, Dremen, Hardwell, Alpha Blondy & The Solar System, Gamma Ray, Luciano, Art Departament, Matador, 091, Love of Lesbian, La Gran Pegatina, Bebe, Nach, Izal, Canteca de Macao, Second, Dorian, La Raíz, Oscar Mulero, Spor, Umek, Celtas Cortos, Fyahbwoy, Foyone, Obús, Def con Dos, Medina Azahara, Fuel Fandango…

You can also move to the rythm of American rapper Wiz Khalifa (in his only concert in Spain), or jump to the indies anthems with Love of Lesbian and Izal. In the Weekend Beach Festival Tower Mar there’s a bit of everything, and that’s its appeal. For this third edition of the most eclectic event of Costa del Sol, the organization doubled the budget to two million euros with the aim to bring 90 artists to its three stages, which this year will grow in size and capacity.

    Los Álamos Beach

Guests. Don Diablo, Nervo, DVBBS, DJ Nano, Deorro, Atica, Juanjo Vergara, Luis Roca, Tommy Walker, Loco Dice, Paco Osuna, Cuartero, Anna Banana, Microluxe, Apollonia.

Los Álamos Beach Fest is part of our calendar and it seems it is here to stay: in 2015, this electronic music festival gathered 20,000 people in Torremolinos. This time the aim is to get to 30,000. There will be a stage less compared to the previous edition: instead of one primary and two secondary now there will be two main stages. The first will feature the most commercial electronic music, and the second will offer underground music, mainly techno. The guests are still to be confirmed.

    Fuengirola Pop

Guests. La Ruta, New Street Adventure, Bronco Bullfrog, Kurt Baker Combo, The Del Shapiros, King Jartur & His Lords, Kriptolites, Champagne, Smoking Victims, Mawino, Octubre, Star Trip, The Silver Beats.

Not a macrofestival, but it does not intend to be it: the value of Fuengirola Pop is to offer good direct shows at short distances in a space for no more than 250 people. And with that philosophy opens its ninth edition. The shelter of music lovers on Costa del Sol programs two nights of punk rock, rock and roll, power pop, garage and surf. The important thing here is not known how popular the group is, but the energy you have on stage: they want to have fun first.

    Starlite Festival

Guests. God Save the Queen, Santana, Charles Aznavour, Tom Jones, Siempre Así, José Luis Perales, Julio Iglesias, Malú, Alejandro Sanz, Bertín Osborne, Noche Movida and many more.

Three decades ago, Alfonso Hohenlohe, Julio Iglesias and Placido Domingo decided to make Cantera de Marbella a unique natural auditorium and created a music festival to make it a benchmark. Today, the Starlite Festival is more than a cultural event that partners with Starlite Gala, a charity gala that hosts Antonio Banderas, one of the central celebrities.

    Canela Party

Guests. Airbag, Nueva Vulcano, Juventud Juché, Atención Tsunami, for the moment.

In this festival, what happens on stage is as important as what happens below. The show is everywhere. On stage, bands playing and dancing. On the other side, you can come across Whatssap emoticons, Wilma Flintstone or the Melillero wave. Here everything is possible. It is CanelaParty. The craziest summer event in Malaga, half concert, half costume party, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.

    Palmito Rock

Guests. Jeff Mallow, guitarist of Serj Tankian, with A Solid Plan. The rest, to be confirmed.

The Palmito Rock turns 20 years of resistance on the agenda of Malaga summer. With a budget “tight” and in a town with just over 3,000 inhabitants, the musical event survives fashions and time in the centre of Villanueva de la Concepción. The guests for this year is still in progress but there are some artists confirmed: Jeff Mallow. To make this twentieth edition something special, the organisers are thinking about carrying out extra activities such as an exhibition of posters and photographs of the festival and bring together some of the musicians who have participated in different editions. Again, it depends on the budget.
