Table service for celiacs: gluten free restaurants in Málaga
It’s everywhere: gluten free. Is it just a trend? No, the number of people diagnosed celiac is increasing and restaurants are taking it upon themselves to offer them options. And there’s more good news: the places with menus for celiacs are cool. The gluten-free distinction is over and now we’re talking gluten-full. The uninspiring days of kale and rice cakes are in the past and having an intolerance to gluten in wheat, barley, rye and probably oats no longer condemns you to a life without the best that these ingredients offer, in other words, pizzas, burgers and ice cream. There are all kinds of options that are also healthier. Here’s our restaurant guide to a gluten-free Costa del Sol.
Aire Gastrobar
Aire Gastrobar is located in an early 20th century building that has been completely restored and decorated to make way for Mediterranean food that is literally a breath of fresh air in Málaga.
The place stands out for its original, exquisite recipes and the care and good taste that have gone into its rooms and dining areas. If you’re told there is an Angus sirloin steak with papa arrugá and mojo picón sauce, believe it… and eat it.
This gastrobar has three different offerings: gastrobar (tapas), formal restaurant and lunch box (takeaway). All of this is aimed at giving the customer top quality at a reasonable price. Depending on the season, availability and preference, the customer can choose from three spaces: bar, rooftop, ground or top floor, where the service is exactly the same. All that remains to say is that this restaurant has eliminated the risk of cross contamination in its process of preparing dishes for celiacs.

If you visit Marbella, like tapas and are also celiac, be sure to visit La Trilla, a tavern offering signature tapas with gluten free options. Conceived as a gastrobar, La Trilla’s cuisine is distinguished by fusing traditional flavours with the latest cutting edge techniques in gastronomy.
Decorated in a minimalist, but cosy style, La Trilla offers a very extensive menu with a wide range of over 100 different dishes: Iberian ham croquettes, Asturian cabral cheese, manchego cheese plate, crostino and cannelloni, seafood dumplings and mushrooms with leaks are just some of the tapas worthy of mention. All that remains to say is that almost all the dishes are suitable for celiacs and are prepared by Matías, an expert in this field, since he also suffers from this intolerance.

Areté Restaurant
It’s no secret that the food at Areté is healthy and varied. It also offers something rather unusual: the chance to enjoy a careful and appetising menu, even if your health is compromised by a problem such as diabetes, cholesterol, uric acid or gluten intolerance.
Certain dishes from the extensive menu bear a discreet symbol (a clover for vegetarians, an ear of wheat for celiacs, etc.), which informs us that this dish can be ordered with an absolute guarantee that it has been prepared following certain guidelines.
The nutritional input that has gone into the refined selection of dishes is combined with their simplicity and careful presentation, and all at very reasonable prices.
