Denominaciones de origen vinos Andalucia

Touring Andalucia wine by wine through its different denominations of origin: the best Andalusian wines

Spanish wines are globally renowned and those made in Andalusia are increasingly prestigious with an average of one million hectolitres produced per campaign. Seventy-five percent of these Andalucian wines are endorsed by one of the seven existing Denominations of Origin: Condado de Huelva, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar, Málaga, Sierras de Málaga, Montilla-Moriles and Granada.

The Mediterranean climate and mild average temperatures (around 16 degrees) make this land an ideal place to grow vines and make famous wines whose popularity has risen in recent years with the arrival of international recognitions, which Andalusian wineries have been able to make the most of with regard to enotourism (guided tours, tastings and shows).

Granada Denomination of Origin – Credito: Bodega Cuatro Vientos

Granadan wines have been protected by the Protected Denomination of Origin since 2009. As a peculiarity, it should be mentioned that there is a subzone called Contraviesa-Alpujarra which has certain peculiar features within the denomination of origin due to the preparations and types of grapes permitted. The viticultural tradition in Granada is centuries old. Indeed it dates back to the Romans. Granadan wines have great personality which reflects the geography.

Given the above, prestigious wines are made thanks to new viticultural techniques and the restoration of native varieties like Vijiriega, Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez in the case of the white grape and Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell with regard to the red grape.

The Granada Denomination of Origin includes all the municipalities of the province; 168 in total.

The Lebrija Denomination of Origin is located in the south of Seville province, very near to Jerez. This area is a privileged place, since its proximity to the river and the marshes means that there is abundant humidity and at the same time the sea brings breezes loaded with sodium and iodine which also reach the vines.

It is the first and only Viticultural Denomination of Origin Seville and it covers the localities of Lebrija and El Cuervo. It is one of the youngest in Spain, since it was obtained in 2010, although it has to be said that the viticultural tradition on these lands is ancestral and dates back to the Phoenicians.

This denomination of origin is closely linked to the González Palacios family, the owner of the two sole wineries producing wines protected by this denomination.
